E’ nel segno dell’umiltà il primo richiamo che il nuovo Papa ha fatto a se stesso. Benedetto XV (1914-1922) fu papa di grande equilibrio, capacita’ organizzativa e grande abnegazione che in tempi difficili attraversati dalla prima guerra mondiale e da una crisi economica seppe impiegare le risorse politiche e storiche per recare soccorso e conforto dove possibile e nel contempo attendere ad un fermo programma di costruzione della Chiesa moderna. Il nome di Benedetto XV rimane legato allo stabilimento di due nuove congregazioni cardinalizie e dunque alla rivalutazione del carattere collegiale della ecclesia. Nel contempo Benedetto XV portò a termine la grande opera iniziata dal suo predecessore del Codex Iuris Canonici la codificazione di tutto il diritto ecclesiastico nel 1917. Questa eredità diventerà traccia vitale nel pontificato del nuovo Benedetto?

Gli storici ricordano Benedetto XV come papa di transizione verso la modernità dopo il pontificato brillante di leone XIII (1878-1903) e quello conservatore di Pio X (1903-1914), ma tuttavia capace di rispondere nel modo migliore a quelle che furono allora le impellenti necessità della Chiesa di fronte ai grandi avvenimenti del tempo.
